Members of a police task force thought they were on track to bust a meth ring, but the trail led them instead to five Metro Detroiters who stole more than $3 million in merchandise, Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard announced Wednesday. “This operation has been operating for several years and we believe they were stealing between $9,000 to $15,000 from retailers a day,” Bouchard said at a news conference. “Its the largest retail fraud operation Ive seen in my career.”
