Court Throws Out $1B Verdict Against State Farm

State Farm Insurance Group celebrated a victory on Thursday as the Illinois Supreme Court reversed a $1 billion judgment against the insurance carrier in a class-action lawsuit alleging that the company used substandard parts to repair damaged cars. The court held that the lawsuit should never have been given class-action status as the differences in customers’ insurance policies meant they did not share the same conditions necessary to sue as a group.
