Part of a multimillion-dollar waterfront mansion near Mattapoisett Harbor is significantly damaged after a fire broke out in the house Tuesday afternoon.

The Regional Old Colony Communications Center in Duxbury said one of its fire engines responded shortly after 1:40 p.m. to the home at 18 Ned’s Point Road.

Mattapoisett Fire Chief Andrew Murray says the fire broke out in the rear exterior of one of the mansion’s wings, where construction crews had been working.

The flames then spread into the second floor and third floor.

"There were many challenges because, obviously, it’s right on the water, so we had a southwest wind blowing at the same time," Murray said. "So we were just trying to contain it and stop the progression of the fire."
